Basildon Council's managing director Scott Logan made the case to developers and investors on why they should work with the council at the launch of issue two of BaSE magazine, which focuses on residential developments and town centre regeneration.
Held at banking firm BNP Paribas in Moorgate on 28 November, around 80 attendees including members of the council, developers and consultants came to hear about ongoing opportunities for investment in the borough.
Keynote speakers at the event were: Basildon Council's managing director Scott Logan, Redrow Homes senior development manager Leigh Johnson, Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects partner Carl Vann and Swan Housing Association projects director Luke Riley.
Logan spoke about the potential on offer in the borough : "Basildon Council remains very much open for business. It [Basildon] is a hive of opportunity and has the ingredients to be one of the most successful places in the south-east.
"It's already the highest economy in Essex and we are well placed and well connected to attract ambitious, innovative and growing businesses."
He also mentioned the Costa coffee roastery which recently opened in Basildon, and the county-wide superfast broadband project, a pioneering collaboration between all six borough councils in Essex to supply high-speed internet to homes and businesses, and is expected to increase growth in the region.
Leigh Johnson of Redrow Homes highlighted its development at Westley Green, in partnership with Housing and Communities Agency and South Essex College, on the site of the college’s former Nethermayne campus: "The sale of the college land facilitates its move to the town centre, which is a real improvement and benefit to the centre in terms of activity and employment."
Basildon-based Swan Housing Association showcased its modular housing scheme at Beechwood on the former Craylands Estate, which was awarded for Best Approach to Modular Construction award at the Inside Housing Development Awards on Monday.
The judges praised the housing association for funding and setting up a £3 million factory in the borough under its 'NU Build' brand to produce 300-400 modular homes per year, which are energy efficient, quick to assemble and can be fully customised by owners prior to building.
The factory, which opened in January, delivered the first consignment of modular homes to Beechwood (former Craylands Estate) in late October, to be assembled on site.
The second delivery of modular homes is due to arrive at Beechwood next week.
Swan's project director Luke Riley said: "In terms of owning our off-site modular [housing], it is about improving the quality of the product, the environmental efficiency of it and also about responding to the challenges within the construction industry.
"More importantly, it was a very easy decision to for us to base this in Basildon; we have schemes there, and live projects, and its also a very good place to do business."
